The Pentagon Paper was the named given to a secret Department of Defense. As the Vietnam War continued, the U.S. military in South Vietnam grew more than 500,00 troops by 1968. Daniel Ellsberg came to not like the war and determined that the American public should be more aware about what contained in the Pentagon Papers. Without anyone knowing he photocopied the reports and in March 1971 gave them to The New York Times. They later published articles of the reports. The federal government unsuccessfully tried to block publication of the Pentagon Papers.
